Lectures-In-Song with Fred Miller: Frank Sinatra
Friday, June 22
6:30
Georgian Court University
Few celebrities have had the multifaceted impact that “Frankie” had on popular music and American culture at large. Sinatra’s colorful— at times abrasive—personality and constant tabloid attention often obscured his seriousness as an artist. From the beginning, he was intent on creating a new sound—adult, sensual, exhilarating, authentic, and always himself. Moving rapidly from teen idol to film and recording star and always a subject of curiosity and controversy, Frank Sinatra attained the rare status of American icon; and like so many of his amazing show business contemporaries, his star only shines brighter with the passage of time. A multicourse dinner and a multimedia lecture will be included.

MidWeek Jazz presents The Vaché Brothers
Wednesday, August 8
8:00 p.m.
The Arts and Community Center of Ocean County College
The Vaché Brothers Band thrilled our audience at their last visit, if only because it was co-led by two musical masters. "A brilliant cornetist who has his own distinctive and beautiful tone, Warren Vaché invigorates small-group swing," writes a viewer calling him a "great cornet player with a quicksilver mind." "Allan Vaché's clarinet playing is marvelous," wrote another, "particularly as he digs in and shares the passion he finds within a tune." Their sidemen are equally skilled and respected, causing critics to praise their work and audiences to applaud the "new, imaginative treatment that keeps old tunes alive."
