Completing the First Step : Following almost 200 hours of intensive classroom and hands-on training, 26 new firefighters recently were feted during graduation exercises at the Ocean County Training Center, Waretown. Environmental Excellence : Ocean County’s pumpout boat program, which recently completed its 13th season of service, received the 2011 New Jersey Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award in the category of Water Resources during a ceremony at the New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, on Dec. 8. A Spooktacular Effort : While ghosts and goblins are some of the highlights of Halloween, making certain the day is a safe one is a priority of Ocean County officials. With emphasis on the importance of Halloween safety, the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs recently held its annual Halloween Safety Coloring Contest receiving more than 3,500 entries from schools throughout Ocean County. A Night to Pay Tribute : The Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office hosted its Valor Award ceremony at Ocean County College on Oct. 27. Emergency responders including police, many volunteer firefighters and citizens were recognized for their life saving efforts going above and beyond the call of duty. Medicare Part D Open Enrollment : During this enrollment period, people with Medicare can sign up for a new Medicare Part D prescription drug plan or switch their current plan. Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari says this is the time to review and make changes to coverage since the final selection for 2012 must be made by Dec. 7. This will ensure that Medicare has enough time to process plan choices so coverage can begin without interruption on Jan. 1, 2012. (Event pictures and more information)
Celebrating Women's Health Month 2011 : WOMEN’S Health Month is being celebrated throughout the month of October in Ocean County with a host of programs, seminars and health screenings at area hospitals, Ocean County Library branches, health departments and other organizations. Honoring Grace Johnson - Women's Advocate 2011 : Currently holding the distinguished position of Assistant Director for the Office of Multicultural Services at Ocean County College, Grace Johnson was named Women’s Advocate of the Year by the Ocean County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women. Her contributions were celebrated by a host of community leaders including Ocean County Freeholder Director Joseph H. Safely Celebrating the 4th : Fireworks displays are scheduled throughout Ocean County this 4th of July holiday. Ocean County officials encourage everyone to leave the fireworks to the professionals.
