Fire Safety Facts for People 50 – Plus

Each year, approximately 1,100 Americans, age 65 and older, die as a result of a home fire.
Seniors between 65 and 74 are TWICE as likely to die in a home fire.
Seniors between 75 and 84 are FOUR TIMES as likely to die in a home fire.
Seniors ages 85 and older are FIVE TIMES as likely to die in a home fire.


CARELESS SMOKING is the leading cause of Fire Deaths and the second leading cause of injuries among people age 65 and older.
* NEVER SMOKE IN BED.
* Use Deep Ashtrays to put your  Cigars and Cigarettes out fully.
* Don’t leave Cigarettes and Cigars unattended.

UNATTENDED COOKING is the third leading cause of Fire Deaths and is the leading cause of injury for Adults – 65 and older.
* Never leave Cooking Unattended. Cooking Fires can ignite quickly.
* Never use your RANGE or OVEN to heat your home.
* Keep Towels, Pot Holders and Curtains away from open flames.

HOME HEATING FIRES are the second leading cause of Fire Deaths and the third leading cause of injury to Adults age 65 and older.
* Be sure the Screen in your Fire Place is large enough to catch rolling logs and flying sparks.
* When buying a portable Space Heater, be sure to purchase brands that feature controls that automatically shut off the power, when the heater is tipped over.
