Creative Writing Class
Residents of the Ocean Co. Juvenile Detention Center may attend Creative
Writing, on a voluntary basis, one time weekly. Presented here are some of our
resident's writings, for your consideration:
The Creative Writing Group, developed and implemented by Ms. Cleo Luff, staff
Social Worker, provides the juveniles in our care the opportunity to express
themselves, their experiences, and their feelings in an appropriate manner
through stories and poems, without fear of ridicule.
Participants in this group are at times given “theme” assignments, which often
encourage significant introspection. They are also given the opportunity to
occasionally write freely about subjects that interest and move them.
Ms. Luff publishes a quarterly in-house journal, which showcases material
collected from the residents participating in this class. This journal is
distributed within the facility.
Very often we fail to see the creativity, emotion and talent in our youth. This
program provides them the opportunity to express these traits and qualities,
while also giving us the chance to witness their talents.
