The Ocean Sheriff’s Office is governed by the regulations promulgated by the New Jersey Department of Personnel. We may only hire from a list that is supplied to us by the state. Individuals wishing to pursue a career with our department must obtain a test application through the New Jersey Department of Personnel. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office is a NEW JERSEY CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION - LAW ENFORCEMENT jurisdiction. All phases of the recruitment, selection and hiring process for entry level law enforcement positions conform to the rules and regulations established by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission and municipal ordinance. Entry level examinations are conducted exclusively by the New Jersey Department of Personnel once every two years. Mandatory Qualifications for Sworn Personnel:


Citizen of the United States
Resident of Ocean County
Must read, write and speak the English language
Minimum of 18 years of age
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Valid NJ Driver’s License
Free of criminal conviction
Good moral character

Steps to becoming a Sheriff’s Officer:

  • Written Civil Service Test

  • Background Investigation

  • Physical Agility Test

  • Oral Interview

  • Psychological Exam

  • Medical and Drug Screening
