Undersheriff Nils R. Bergquist


On January 1, 2017 Nils R. Bergquist was appointed by Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy to serve as Undersheriff. Undersheriff Bergquist brings with him over 40 years of law enforcement experience.

Undersheriff Bergquist is native to Ocean County. He is a graduate of Point Pleasant High School, Class of 1974 and graduated from the Ocean County Police Academy in 1978, Basic Class 31. In May of 1996, Undersheriff Bergquist graduated from Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.

Undersheriff Bergquist began his law enforcement career in May of 1977 as a seasonal police officer with the Seaside Heights Police Department. In February of 1978, he was sworn in at the rank of Officer with the Ocean Gate Police Department.

In December of 1980, Undersheriff Bergquist started his service with the Brick Township Police Department. He was promoted to Sergeant on May 29, 1990, then Lieutenant on April 23, 1996, Captain on May 2, 2001 and achieved the rank of Chief on January 1, 2008.

Undersheriff Bergquist began his career with the Brick Township Police Department as a patrolman. As a Sergeant he supervised a patrol squad and the Drug Enforcement Unit. As Lieutenant and Captain, he commanded a patrol shift, the Professional Standards Unit, the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), the Investigations Division, the Administrative Services Division and the Operations Division. While Chief, Bergquist also served as the Brick Township Municipal Emergency Management Coordinator. He was recognized by the Brick Township Mayor and Council for his actions during Superstorm Sandy.

In 2005, Undersheriff Bergquist led a strike team composed of police and sheriff’s officers from Ocean County. The Strike Team was part of a Task Force organized by the New Jersey State Police deployed to Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. Undersheriff Bergquist retired as Chief on December 1, 2015. He has received commendations from the Brick Township Police Department, the private sector and other law enforcement agencies.

Undersheriff Bergquist has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice for outstanding contributions in drug law enforcement. He is currently the President of The Advocacy for Drug Education in Jersey; a nonprofit organization established to support the DARE Program in New Jersey. He is a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International. Undersheriff Bergquist has been recognized by The Jersey Shore Council of Boy Scouts of America with the Good Turn and Loyal Order of Buffalo Awards for his work supporting scouting and Ocean County’s youth.

Undersheriff Bergquist is a member of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police; having served as Chairman of Legislative and Public Policy Committee, The Ocean County Police Chief’s Association, The International Association of Chiefs of Police where he served on the Patrol and Tactical Operations Committee, Point Pleasant Boro High School Hall of Fame and the Jersey Shore Council of Boy Scouts of America; Garden Party Committee to raise funds for needy Scouts.

Undersheriff Bergquist resides in Brick Township and is happily married to his wife of 40 years. They have two children and three grandchildren.
