Chief John H. Farnkopf


Under the direction of Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy and Undersheriff Sheriff William T. Sommeling, Chief Farnkopf is responsible for overseeing the Operations and Investigations divisions.  Table of Organization

Chief John H. Farnkopf began his career with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office in 1991. He graduated from the Ocean County Police Academy as a member of the 55th Basic Police Class. He was initially placed in the Judicial Division at the rank of Sheriff’s Officer and was reassigned to the ID Unit. He later was promoted to Sergeant where he served the Warrant and Judicial divisions. He remained in the Judicial Division through the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain. Shortly after being promoted to Captain, he was assigned the duty of Division Commander of the 911 Communications Division. He was appointed as Chief on May 16, 2013 by William T. Sommeling who was Acting Sheriff at the time. He continued to manage Communications and it's transfer to the newly constructed 911 center while performing the duties as Chief.


Chief Farnkopf is a lifelong resident of Ocean County and attended Brick Memorial High School. He served in the United States Army Military Police Corps for 3 years. He is currently married with two children.
