Judy Garland
Friday, May 17
6:30 PM
Georgian Court University
Judy Garland was Hollywood’s greatest female musical star, a doe-eyed, ordinary-looking American girl with a genius for singing. No one ever entranced an audience as she did over the 15 years she was MGM’s leading lady and thereafter, when she proved herself to be arguably the world’s most electrifying live concert performer. “Born in a trunk,” as she recounted so memorably in A Star Is Born, Garland was the ultimate “show business baby.” Few performers created the infectious kinship with a live audience that she did, and her place in our collective memory has taken on full-blown cult status. Fred Miller’s Lecture In-Song on Judy Garland pays full tribute to this alternately fragile and overwhelming performer—the endearing, enduring waif who continues to eclipse all the competition.

MidWeek Jazz presents Baby Soda
Wednesday, June 5
8:00 PM
The Arts and Community Center of Ocean County College
Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn are becoming the center of a jazz revolution as twentysomethings flock to the small clubs there, enjoying classic jazz played by highly skilled musicians in the same age group. Baby Soda is a band that is at the apex of this movement, yet is rarely heard on this side of the Hudson, although some of the members are becoming well known from appearances for MidWeek Jazz and other bands. Peter Ford leads the group, playing an unusual box bass, with Emily Asher, who has led her own band here, as their usual trombonist. A real treat for all of our jazz fans!

MidWeek Jazz presents Fete Manouche
Wednesday, June 19
8:00 PM
The Arts and Community Center of Ocean County College
Fete Manouche played for MidWeek Jazz in celebration of Django Reinhardt's centennial, so it is appropriate to have them back as we commemorate 60 years without the great Gypsy Jazz guitarist. Django originated this electrifying, fast-paced genre that maintains its popularity in Europe. Originally, violin joined the rapid-fire guitar work that is central to this style, but Dan Levinson substitutes clarinet, reflecting later versions of Django's groups. Tom Landinan and Tedd Gottsegen are the pivotal blistering guitarists here, with Molly Ryan playing rhythm guitar and singing those tunes that come with engaging lyrics. Rod Adkins supports them all with the thumping string bass. The combination produces jazz at its best!
