Collection of Appliances
Regulations from the United States Environmental Protection Agency require that Freon be removed from appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators prior to disposal.
Residents can contact an appliance dealer to remove the Freon from the appliance, who will then issue a receipt to provide to your municipality for pickup of the appliance.
There is a charge for this service.
Please consult your Yellow Pages for dealers who provide this service or contact the Department of Solid Waste Management at (732) 506-5047 for information.
Some municipalities may also provide this service.
MUNICIPALITIES AND PRIVATE HAULERS WILL NOT COLLECT APPLIANCES CONTAINING FREON UNLESS THIS RECEIPT IS PRESENTED.
For further information, please contact your municipal public works’ office.
Recently New Jersey has launched a refrigerator/freezer recycling program, that not only enables residents to have these appliances hauled out of their homes for free and but will also issue a $50 credit to the resident.
The program recycles 95 percent of the appliance and is limited to removal of two units per household. Appliances that are to be recycled must be in working order and have an inside measurement of 10 cubic feet or more.
