Collection of Appliances
>Option 1
Regulations from the United States Environmental Protection Agency require that Freon be removed from such appliances as air conditioners and refrigerators before disposal.
Residents can contact an appliance dealer to remove the Freon from the appliance who will then issue a receipt to provide to your municipality for pickup of the appliance. There is a charge for this service.
Please consult your Yellow Pages for dealers who provide this service or contact the Department of Solid Waste Management at (732) 506-5047 for information.
Some municipalities may also provide this service.
MUNICIPALITIES AND PRIVATE HAULERS WILL NOT COLLECT APPLIANCES CONTAINING FREON UNLESS THIS RECEIPT IS PRESENTED.
For further information, please contact your municipal public works’ office.
Option 2
The State has just launched a refrigerator/freezer recycling program, that enables residents to have these appliances hauled out of their homes for free and receive a $30 incentive.
The program recycles 95 percent of the appliance and is limited to removal of two units per household. The appliances that are to be recycled must be in working order and have an inside measurement of 10 cubic feet or more.
