Option 1Regulations from the United States Environmental Protection Agency require Freon to be removed from appliances (such as air conditioners and refrigerators) prior to disposal.
Residents may contact an appliance dealer to remove Freon from the appliance and issue the resident a receipt, which should then be provided to the resident's municipality in order to arrange pickup of the appliance.
There is a charge for this service.
MUNICIPALITIES AND PRIVATE HAULERS WILL NOT COLLECT APPLIANCES CONTAINING FREON UNLESS THIS RECEIPT IS PRESENTED.
Consult your Yellow Pages for dealers who provide this service or contact the Department of Solid Waste Management at (732) 506-5047 for more information. Some municipalities may also provide this service.
For further information, please contact your municipal public works office.
Option 2Recently New Jersey has launched a refrigerator/freezer recycling program which will not only enable residents to have these appliances hauled out of their homes for free, but will also issue a $50 credit to the resident.
The program recycles 95 percent of the appliance and is limited to removal of two units per household. Appliances to be recycled must be in working order and have an interior measurement of 10 cubic feet or greater.
