The Commission, created in 1969, has nine members,
appointed to five-year terms. All
volunteers, they advance excellence and diversity in the arts by promoting
aesthetic, intellectual, and cultural expressions through accessibility and
education. The staff and the Commission
members together formulate the central county agency that is charged with
advocating for the arts and humanities.
The agency develops,
fosters, and evaluates programs and services in the arts and history, which
further the growth and knowledge of the County’s cultural and heritage resources. The staff works directly with individuals,
organizations, and community groups, as well as local, state, regional, and
federal agencies to enhance and support cultural and historic activities.
In order to provide
diverse, high quality cultural and historical programs and services, the
Commission explores the availability of arts and heritage funding through grant
support from local, state, federal, and private sources:
The Commission
administers matching grants, funded through the New Jersey State Council on
the Arts Local Arts Program, in order to support and promote
community arts. The Commission also distributes applications and guidelines for
other arts grants through the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, such as the
Folk Arts Apprenticeship, and Community Arts Collaboration, and serves as a
bridge of communication between local, county and state opportunities for
arts-based individuals and organizations.
The New Jersey Historical Commission awards
the Commission with a grant that is then
regranted to local
historical organizations through the Commission. The Cultural and Heritage Commission also awards mini-grants and
assists with a variety of local history projects. Additional grant guidelines
and applications are distributed to local history organizations from the state
as they apply to a particular project, and the Commission assists with the
application process.
Information: The staff provides
assistance to the general public, teachers, historical and art organizations,
students, the media, and lawmakers regarding varied inquiries on cultural and
heritage affairs.
Referral: The staff may also direct inquiries to other
sources for information about local history, historic preservation, genealogy,
professional artists, arts organizations, arts presenters, and funding.
Assistance: The staff helps with
research for publications, films/videos, and nominations to the historic places
registers.
Education:
Educational seminars and workshops are presented for the benefit of the general
public.
The Commission sponsors a number of ongoing
programs and activities, including:
