Barnegat Township - Coastal Shipping and Shipbuilding

Schooners, sneak boxes, flat bottom scows and garveys -- boats of all sizes, were built along the New Jersey coast. Barnegat was one of several Ocean County towns where shipbuilding was an important industry. The shallow draft garvey was used for oystering and clamming and the scows for carrying salt hay. The small schooner was used for shipping lumber, cordwood, and charcoal.
