Lakehurst Borough - Lakehurst Naval Air Station

At one time, dirigibles were a farniliar sight in Ocean County. The Naval Air Station at Lakehurst, with its huge hangars, housed many of the Navy's better known airships: the Shenandoah was one of the Navy's largest; the Akron, built by the Goodyear Rubber Company, later crashed in 1933 near Barnegat Lighthouse; the Macon met its fate crashing in the Pacific Ocean in 1935; and, of course, the Hindenburg burned at Lakehurst after a trans-Atlantic flight. The airships are no longer used by the Navy although the hangars remain as a testament to the era.
