Lakewood Township - Lake Carasaljo

At one time, Lakewood was a resort where city people came to improve their health. People would stroll around Lake Carasaljo breathing in the fresh pine air. The lake was named after the three daughters of Joseph Brick, the well known operator of Bergen Iron Works. It was lined with hotels visited by many notable people of the day. George Gould built his two hundred-acre estate there, which today is Georgian Court College. Not far from Gould's estate was the estate of John D. Rockefeller, which today is the Ocean County Park.
