Long Beach Township - Long Beach Massacre

There was a bloody massacre on Long Beach Island during the American Revoluntionary War. On October 25, 1782, a British ship ran aground on the shoals at the end of the island. Captain Andrew Steelman of the American vessel Alligator, out of Cape May, pillaged the tea from the British ship. That night as the Americans lay resting on the beach, a band of Tory raiders, led by "Bloody John Bacon," sailed over from the mainland and massacred Captain Steelman and all but five of his twenty-five crewmen.
