Mantoloking Borough - The Bark Invermay

In the early days, many ships ran aground along the Jersey coast, particularly in the area from Squan Inlet to Cranberry Inlet. The area became known as the "Graveyard of the Sea." On April 12, 1913, the bark Invernay ran aground off the beach at Mantoloking. Eventually a life saving station was built at Mantoloking and many wrecked ships and passenges were rescued by the men from the life saving station.
