K-9 Unit

Lieutenant Stephen Bauman
Division Commander

The Sheriff's Department's K9 Unit provides specialized dogs for Law Enforcement. There are 5 bomb-detecting dogs, 5 tracking dogs, and 5 drug dogs, plus an arson dog and an air scent dog in training. None of the Sheriff's dogs are cross-trained nor are used as patrol dogs.

Our K-9 unit is also responsible for "Project Life Saver" which helps to locate Alzheimer patients who wander off. They use specialized tracking devices provided through joint efforts of the Sheriff, Senior Services, and the County Freeholder Board.

In addition to serving all law enforcement agencies in Ocean County, the K-9 Unit also assists various state, county and municipal agencies throughout New Jersey.
