First High Sheriff of the Ocean County

Joseph Parker was appointed as the first High Sheriff of the newly formed County of Ocean after its separation from Monmouth in 1850. He was legally elected that fall; received the nomination of the Whig party and retired in 1853 as a humane and popular sheriff.

Sheriff Parker was born in Forked River on July 5, 1818. In 1836 he married Miss Elizabeth Predmore by whom he had twelve children. He was known for becoming a sea captain engaging in Southern Trade; opening the Lafayette House hotel in Forked River; grading the Toms River and Waretown railroad and held the favor of many warm friends.

High Sheriff Joseph Parker was well known throughout Ocean County during that era.
