1/29/2025 - Commissioners Arace and Bacchione Support Executive Order on Temporary Offshore Wind Moratorium |
Ocean County, NJ – Ocean County Commissioners Robert Arace and Jennifer Bacchione expressed their strong support for the Executive Order issued by President Trump, which temporarily withdraws all areas of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) from offshore wind leasing and initiates a comprehensive review of federal wind leasing and permitting practices.
"I commend the President's decision to prioritize responsible stewardship of our natural resources and safeguard the interests of our coastal communities. This moratorium on offshore wind leasing ensures that critical questions about the ecological, economic, and environmental impacts of these projects are thoroughly addressed," said Commissioner Arace.
Ocean County's shoreline and fishing industry are vital to our local economy and heritage. Offshore wind projects have raised concerns among residents, businesses, and environmental advocates regarding their potential impacts on marine ecosystems, navigational safety, and energy costs. By temporarily halting new offshore wind leasing, this Executive Order provides an opportunity to examine these issues with the care and attention they deserve.
The directive also underscores the need to evaluate the broader effects of federal wind projects, including:
• Protecting Marine Life: Ensuring that wind energy projects do not harm marine mammals, birds, and other wildlife.
• Preserving the Fishing Industry: Safeguarding access to vital fishing grounds and maintaining the livelihoods of those who depend on our coastal waters.
• Economic Viability: Analyzing the true costs of wind energy, including subsidies and the challenges associated with intermittent energy generation.
• Environmental Accountability: Reviewing the environmental impact of defunct windmills and ensuring mechanisms for their safe removal.
"As Commissioner, my priority is to protect the character and resources of Ocean County for future generations. This Executive Order aligns with that goal by abiding by responsible development and preserving our natural environment," Commissioner Bacchione added.
Both Commissioners, in a joint statement, also called for enhanced public engagement and transparency throughout the review process. "The voices of our residents, fishermen, and community leaders must be heard. We must work together to ensure that any future energy development is in the best interest of our communities, economy, and environment."
With its natural resources and coastal economy, Ocean County will remain vigilant in monitoring the federal government's review and advocating for policies that protect its unique character and heritage. |
