The Department of Consumer Affairs operates under the authority of the Consumer Fraud Act. All Investigators have successfully completed the course of study prescribed by and are Agents of the Attorney General of the State of New Jersey.

We are charged with the protection of the public, and ensuring that businesses comply with the consumer protection laws of the State of New Jersey.

The staff consists of state certified investigators who mediate and enforce complaints between a consumer and a business located in Ocean County, with the goal of coming to a satisfactory resolution for both parties.

Consumer Protection, Weights & Measures, and Energy Council, are all divisions that encompass the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs.

Freeholder QuinnWe are all consumers and as such we expect our services to be provided in a timely manner, and safely by legitimate contractors. We want our purchases to be priced fairly and our merchandise delivered in good condition. As consumers living in Ocean County, it’s good to know we are well protected.

The Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs is ready to help our citizens when problems arise. The well-trained and professional staff that work in our Consumer Affairs Department and its associated divisions, help with making certain consumer protection laws are followed whether in a store or by a contractor. We are not anti-business in Ocean County but we are opposed to those businesses that consistently don’t follow the rules and make a practice of deceiving consumers. Our message to them is stop the bad practices or answer a judge.

Over the years, we have forged beneficial partnerships with state and county law enforcement agencies and local police departments helping in our efforts to stop consumer fraud and to better protect the consumer.

The Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs makes sure consumers are protected from scammers. With more than 200,000 seniors living in Ocean County, we are especially vigilant in our efforts to stop our seniors from being victims of scams.

In addition to implementing consumer laws, the department works to educate consumers about their rights. There is much truth in that the best consumer is a well-educated consumer.

We offer in person community orientated speaking engagements and our Investigators are “State Certified” by the NJ State Attorney General’s Office, Division of Consumer Affairs.

Education is key to the prevention of Consumer Fraud in the high-tech world we live in. We realize people make mistakes and may be taken advantage of at the most vulnerable times of their lives. We are here to assist you and we will do everything we can to offer assistance.
