OCEAN RIDE RECEIVES THE HUMANITARIAN AWARD FROM CAREGIVER VOLUNTEERS OF CENTRAL JERSEY

OCEAN RIDE, which operates numerous bus routes and provides transportation services for elderly and vulnerable county residents, is the recipient of the 2020 Humanitarian Award from the Caregiver Volunteers of Central New Jersey Alzheimer’s Respite Care Program.
“We couldn’t be more honored than to receive this award from a volunteer organization,” said Ocean County Commissioner Director Gary Quinn. “This means a tremendous amount to us.”
In presenting the award, Caregivers Volunteers Executive Director Megan O’Keefe said Ocean Ride has gone “above and beyond” in caring for the elderly and those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.
O’Keefe called the transportation Department’s efforts “exceptional,” especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“During the height of the pandemic, you stepped up to deliver food to some of our most vulnerable clients,” she said while presenting the award to Quinn and Ocean County Transportation Director Dave Fitzgerald. “You and your staff provided a friendly ‘masked’ face. It was assurance that our vulnerable residents still had a support network, and in the midst of chaos they were not forgotten.”
O’Keefe said her organization is “honored” to call Ocean Ride a partner in caring for the county’s elderly residents.
Fitzgerald said he was flattered to accept the award from the organization that has long worked hand-in-hand with Ocean Ride.
“To receive this from one of our peers really means a lot,” he said.
Quinn thanked Fitzgerald and his staff for their ongoing efforts during the pandemic.
“This award belongs to Dave and the staff in this department that goes above and beyond every day serving the people of Ocean County,” Quinn said.
The county operates two major services through Ocean Ride.
The Ocean Ride transportation system currently includes 12 bus routes that traverse the county.
The routes are designed to connect key residential areas with popular destinations such as local governmental facilities, healthcare, shopping, employment, social services and other transit connections. The bus routes operate on a fixed schedule, making it easy for anyone to plan a trip.
“Reserve-A-Ride” provides door-to-door, non-emergency medical transportation service to seniors age 60 and over and persons with disabilities age 18 and over. This service is offered by advanced registration basis primarily to destinations within Ocean County.

Transportation services provided by this agency are in whole or part funded through federal funds received through NJ TRANSIT and as an individual you also have the right to file your complaint under ADA to both Ocean Ride as well as the U.S. Department of Justice, 950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Civil Rights Division Disability Rights Section – NYA, Washington, D.C. 20530. A complaint must be filed within 180 days of the alleged discrimination.

Passengers are allowed to bring portable medical oxygen and/or service animal on board the vehicle. This information is available in large format.

Reasonable Modification Policy

The Ocean County Department of Transportation Services (Ocean Ride) will make a reasonable attempt to provide additional assistance requested by any passengers with disabilities so as long as the request does not present a direct threat of safety to the passenger(s) and/or the county employee and/or the request does not alter the fundamental transportation services provided by the County of Ocean.

To make a “Reasonable Modification” request, you must call a day in advance of travel and contact Ocean Ride at (732) 736-8989, Ext. 4.
